A cephalohematoma occurs when blood collects between membranes surrounding a newborn’s skull and the skull itself. More specifically, the blood gathers between the periosteum, which are membranes that directly encompass the bones in our bodies, and the bone of the skull.
This type of bleeding can occur in an infant due to a birth injury, either in labor or delivery, or because of a previously unknown fracture in the infant’s skull bone, which is found in roughly 5-10% of all cephalohematoma cases. Delivery of the baby by forceps or by use of a vacuum can also result in cephalohematoma. Symptoms of this condition are often a noticeable bulge on the newborn’s head. If there are soft or spongy regions on the infant’s head, this could indicate small areas of where blood collected, whereas firmer areas could indicate larger areas of pooled blood. Complications may arise if the newborn develops an infection from the blood that has already collected. If calcium deposits appear on the infant’s skull, this can also greatly complicate the recovery process. Cephalohematomas typically go away on their own and treatment may not be necessary.

Last month, an article came out that highlighted the hidden dangers in what your baby may be really drinking with each bottle you make. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a man-made chemical that is found in a vast number of products, ranging from plastic to compact discs to baby bottles.
When a bipartisan agreement was made to block BPA from being used in the production of baby bottles and sippy cups for children, lobbyists from the chemical industry sought to block this amendment that was part of the Food Safety Modernization Act.
The reason for blocking BPA is because the chemical can essentially obstruct and modify how certain hormones would otherwise naturally work within the body. There is growing evidence that BPA is linked to concerning health conditions such as forms of cancers, disorders with reproduction, cardiac disorders, diabetes, and premature puberty.
According to the news story, Canada and a handful of states in the U.S. have already been successful in labeling BPA as a “toxic threat” and the legislatures in those states are already at work to ban BPA from affecting children of any age. The Environmental Working Group provides helpful information for those of you who are looking for more tips on how to go BPA-free.
Statistics
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading causes of death among children ages 5-14 are accidents and cancer. While more research is required to link BPA to certain forms of cancer and other severe health concerns, some companies are already doing their part in removing the chemical from impacting vulnerable infants and children.
