Nan Far Woodworking Recalls Drop-Side Cribs due to Entrapment Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of an estimated 16,700 Rockland Furniture drop-side cribs by Nan Far Woodworking Co. Ltd. due to fall, entrapment, and suffocation hazards.

The Defect

The drop-side of the crib can fall out of position as the result of detachment, malfunction, or otherwise failure of the drop-side. This creates a space which an infant or toddler may roll into and become wedged or entrapped, which can lead to suffocation or strangulation. This space may also cause a child to fall out of the crib.

Injuries

The CPSC and the company have received reports of five incidents where the drop sides malfunctioned or detached, including one where a child became entrapped and suffered minor scratches and bruises.

Product Details

The recall includes drop-side cribs with the brand name “Rockland Furniture” and the model number on the lower part of the headboard panel on a rectangular label. The wooden cribs use plastic hardware to attach the drop-side. The recalled models include:

  • 343-8124 Nightingale Spindle Drop-Side Crib
  • 343-8280 Cottage Standard Drop-Side Crib Version 1
  • 343-8271 Cottage Standard Drop-Side Crib Version 2
  • 343-9105 Drop-Side Crib and Changer
  • 343-8191 Renew Standard Drop-Side Crib
  • 343-8192 Renew Convertible Drop-Side Crib

The cribs were manufactured in Taiwan and sold at JCPenney retail stores and online at jcpenney.com from January 2005 through December 2008 for between $150 and $400.

Remedy

Consumers of the affected drop-side cribs should immediately stop using them and contact Nan Far Woodworking for a repair kit to immobilize the defective drop-side at no-cost. For additional information, consumers may contact Nan Far Woodworking at (877) 967-5770.

Malden Baby Recovering from 4 Ft Fall; Dad Denied Bail for Throwing Him to the Ground

Carlos Edwards, 34, of Melrose faces serious child abuse charges following a July 20 incident when Edwards reportedly threw his then 7-week-old son, Carmello Sears, to the ground as Edwards and the infant’s mother, Crystle Sears, were arguing outside of Sears’ home in Malden.

What Happened
Edwards had gone to Sears’ home in Malden to ask her for money. Sears is reportedly Edwards’ girlfriend of two years. An argument ensued and, at some point, Sears gave Carmello to Edwards and also gave him her EBT card as Edwards continued to hold the baby.

The argument continued and escalated, which is when Edwards reportedly threw Carmello approximately 4 feet in the air. The infant bounced off of Crystle and landed on the pavement. Two witnesses immediately contacted police and reported what they had seen.

According to The Boston Globe, Carmello had suffered a double skull fracture, a blood clot in his brain, and his leg was broken from the fall.

Carmello was released from a Boston hospital on July 28 after a stay in the intensive care unit and is said to be recovering from his severe child abuse injuries. The long-term effects due to the fall are unknown.

Edwards has been held without bail since his July 28 dangerousness hearing in Malden District Court. He has entered not guilty pleas to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a child causing serious injury. Edwards is expected back in court on August 18.

Shaken Baby Syndrome & Injuries to Infants
Thankfully, Carmello is recovering from this horrific incident, instead of the incident ending in tragedy.

According to research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), parents and caretakers who violently shake or throw infants, who they are entrusted to care for, do so because of extreme anger or frustration.

No matter what a parent or caregiver is experiencing, their emotions should never be taken out on an innocent and vulnerable infant. The dangers to babies from these types of child abuse injuries – shaking, throwing, or falling – are significant and can oftentimes result in severe and permanent injuries or even fatalities.

For example, a Lawrence father faced child injury charges last week after violently shaking his infant son, causing the infant to go blind.

Intentional and violent shaking of an infant is known as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) and it is the leading cause of infant deaths across the U.S., the CDC reports.

Infants younger than 4 months are at the most significant risk of child abuse injuries, as research shows constant or inconsolable crying is typically a common trigger for parents or caretakers to lose patience with an infant.

3-Year-Old Seriously Injured in Springfield Accident

A 3-year-old child was seriously injured in an Interstate 91 accident in Springfield on Saturday night when the car the child was traveling in was struck near the Interstate 291 interchange.

A 27-year-old woman who was driving the struck car, a 1991 Buick Century, was also injured in the crash.

According to police, the accident happened after the woman’s car was pulled over on the side of the road when it was hit by Elizabeth Ramos, 27, of Springfield, who was operating a 2011 Honda.

Of the five people in the Buick, including three children, four were injured, three of them children. The 3-year-old, who was trapped in the Buick, suffered serious injuries.

The other two children were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The fourth passenger in the Buick was not injured. Ramos was also uninjured, police said.

The accident is under investigation by different departments of the Massachusetts State Police.

Vehicle Accidents and Child Injuries

It was not immediately clear from the news reports regarding this accident if any of the children were properly restrained before the crash, but it is a well known fact that child seats and seat belts save children’s lives in traffic accidents.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicles are the leading cause of death and fatal injury in children under 14.

Making sure that a child is securely restrained before riding in a motor vehicle is crucial and often makes the difference between life and death following an auto accident.

When to Call a Personal Injury Attorney

If you, or your child, have been injured in a similar two-vehicle accident in Massachusetts which was caused by another driver’s negligence, you may be able to file a personal injury claim against the negligent party.

When you are interviewing personal injury attorneys in Massachusetts, ask critical questions, like:

  • How long have you been practicing personal injury law?
  • What is the largest settlement or verdict you have won on behalf of your clients?
  • Do you have experience suing powerful corporations on behalf of injured victims?

The Boston personal injury lawyer, Thomas Kiley, has been fighting for victims in car accident cases for over 30 years, and has secured millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients.

Tom Kiley and his team at the Kiley Law Group take time when speaking with you about your case. We will work with you on a contingent fee basis so there are NO FEES unless our trained personal injury lawyers win your case.
